How I Work

Please note that I am now taking on new clients.

My training

I was trained in, and follow the Functional Medicine model, which has been shown to produce better outcomes for patients (1). This approach seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease by seeing the body as an interconnected ecosystem. It focuses on nutrition, lifestyle, and genetic individuality to optimise health and prevent disease.

Central to this approach is restoring balance in physiological systems, such as digestion, hormones, and immunity, through nutrient-dense, species-appropriate foods and mitigating environmental stressors.

Functional medicine prioritises long-term wellness by addressing deficiencies, improving nutrient bioavailability, and supporting cellular function, fostering resilience against chronic disease while enhancing overall vitality and health-span.

I combine this approach with my knowledge and understanding of human evolution.

The typical process

I currently work with a very small number of clients on the Foundations package and they have complex problems and health histories, and I go deep - working with then for a minimum of 6 months.

This is because in my experience this is how long it takes to “peel back the layers of the onion”, starting with the most obvious problems and acute symptoms, and progressing towards the real root cause(s).

I also provide the on-going support clients need to make lasting changes that support optimum long-term health and wellbeing, and there's a significant educational aspect to this.

The steps I typically go through with clients Foundations package are:

  1. Initial free phone conversation (no time limit, can be multiple conversations).

  2. Completion of my clinic paperwork so I can learn as much about you as possible (for example, symptoms, triggers, family history, what you eat, how you sleep, etc,.).

  3. Phone consultation to discuss initial hypothesis and recommended next steps.

  4. Ordering and completion of laboratory tests, which may include blood, urine, stool (see typical pricing here).

  5. Phone consultation(s) to discuss test results.

  6. Phone consultation(s) to discuss recommended next steps/ improvement protocol (typically involving diet and life-style changes as well as pharmaceutical or herbal medications/ supplements).

  7. Contact with GP as appropriate (always discussed beforehand).

  8. Weekly phone consultation/ check-in (as desired and needed).

  9. Follow-up laboratory testing.

  10. Ongoing education to ensure clients are better equipped going forward (this is a key part of working with me and it's why I have started a podcast).

What to expect

You’ll likely need to do some or all of the following:

  1. Adopt a diet that’s “species appropriate”, i.e., something close to paleo or “nutrivore”.

  2. Make changes to various lifestyle factors, including sleep, stress management, toxic/ sunlight exposure, etc.,

  3. Track what you eat and drink in the Cronometer app.

  4. Follow detailed supplement protocols to restore micronutrient status, tackle viruses, address bacterial imbalance, aid detoxification, etc.,

  5. I might also ask you to watch lectures and listen to podcasts that provide context and evidence for my recommendations.
